A great reason your family should be participating in Snipe sailboat racing is best expressed by this comment from a parent competing at a recent Snipe USA National Championship event with his teenage daughter;

‘There are few other sports or activities which provide the opportunity for a father to spend an entire week with his teenage daughter talking and working together on a goal oriented activity.’

The design of the Snipe sailboat and the orientation of the Snipe Class produces a recreational environment which is very constructive and enjoyable for the family. The entire family, at all skill levels, can become involved in a group, goal oriented activity. They can participate for an extended period of their lifetime. It places your child in a constructive environment with a mixture of seniors, adults, young adults and children, which promotes interaction with adults, maturity and responsibility.

As a two-person boat with whisker pole for the jib (no spinnaker and its associated costs and complexity) the entire team is always intimately involved. Families often start out with their young children crewing with a parent. After a while you will find the parent crewing for the child and then the children forming teams with their friends to compete directly with their parents. A true family of sailors. It’s not unusual to find second and third generations of Snipe sailors participating at the local and national level, often at the same time. Their involvement in Snipe sailing has been so overall rewarding to them that they have chosen to make this a permanent and ongoing part of their life. It’s family recreation, together for a lifetime.
