SCIRA USA BOARD OF DIRECTORS POSITION OPENINGS

At its November 15, 2011, meeting of its Board of Directors, a nominating committee comprised of Ken Culver – Chair, Jack Gannon and Doug Hart was formed to seek volunteers for the following BOD positions to be elected at the January 2012 BOD meeting:

    • PRAM Officer/Member at Large Two year term beginning 1/1/12

    • Publisher of the US Snipe Sailor Magazine Two year term beginning 1/1/12

    • International Qualifications Officer/Member at Large Two year term beginning 1/1/12

    • National Secretary (“NS”) Two year term beginning 1/1/12

    • Vice National Secretary (“VNS”) Two year term beginning 1/1/12

    • Regarding the BOD positions mentioned above:

PRAM Officer/Member at Large: Public Relations/Advertising/Merchandising Officer. The SCIRA USA Board of Directors has recently determined that the Class must focus on fleet development and growth. One of the key drivers of growth is to successfully promote the Class in as many outlets as possible. Accordingly, this role is tasked with driving an aggressive Public Relations program that promotes the Serious Sailing, Serious Fun motto that we all live by. In addition, this position also has the responsibility to oversee SCIRA USA’s advertising and merchandising programs and Chairs the Media Committee. For a detailed description of the roles and responsibilities of this position, please go to http://www.snipeus.org/downloads/docs/DirectorRolesAndResponsibilities.pdf. Any member interested in filling this position is encouraged to contact the nominating committee for more information.

Publisher of the US Snipe Sailor Magazine: Very generally, this position has primary responsibility for all facets of publishing the quarterly printed US Snipe Sailor and periodic E-Newsletter as Editor in Chief, and Chairs the Editorial Board. More specifically, this person will: schedule and conduct quarterly editorial board meetings for the purpose of planning upcoming issues; supervise and participate in development of ideas for magazine content; coordinate and assist with development of content as needed which may include creating content and direct solicitation of content from other (non-editorial board) contributors; serve as collection point for articles and other content, from editorial board members and other contributors; organize and edit content as needed; layout magazine, produce press-quality output for printing, and print and distribute the US Snipe Sailor. Requires experience with desktop publishing software (e.g. Adobe InDesign) and graphics software (e.g. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). This position requires approximately 40-60 hours per issue with the majority of that time incurred for final editing and setup in the two weeks prior to press time. Any member interested in filling this position is encouraged to contact the nominating committee for more information.

International Qualifications Officer/Member at Large: The International Qualifications Officer is responsible for overseeing the qualification process for various SCIRA International Events. The position is responsible for maintaining and interpreting the Rules for Qualification to International Events. The objective of the position is to administer the qualification process consistent with the existing rules and make sure these rules are clear and understood by all SCIRA US members. This position is currently filled by Lee Griffith. Lee has consented, that if nominated, he would serve a new term. For a detailed description of the roles and responsibilities of this position, please go to http://www.snipeus.org/downloads/docs/DirectorRolesAndResponsibilities.pdf. Any member interested in filling this position is encouraged to contact the nominating committee for more information.

NS and VNS: The current SCIRA USA NS, Gene Soltero, and VNS, Martin Bebb, have been serving in their respective positions since 1/1/11. It recently came to the attention of the BOD that the terms of the SCIRA USA NS and VNS were not concurrent with the terms of the SCIRA NS and VNS as required by the SCIRA ByLaws. In order to make the SCIRA USA and SCIRA NS and VNS terms concurrent, the NS and VNS are standing for a new two year term beginning on 1/1/12. Any member interested in filling either of these positions is encouraged to contact the nominating committee for more information. Gene and Martin have both consented, that if nominated, they would both serve. As Gene and Martin will have already served one year in their respective positions as of 1/1/12, they have told the board, that if elected to new 2-year terms effective 1/1/12 that Gene would serve as NS through 12/31/12, total service of two years as NS, and Martin would be willing to serve as NS for 2013, filling out the remainder of Gene’s term. The BOD would need to elect a VNS for 2013 who would fill out the rest of Martin’s VNS term and who would be the prime candidate-in-waiting for a new 2-year NS term 2014-2015. Having planned all this, both Martin and Gene would welcome the chance to let someone else have the opportunity to serve in either capacity for the two-year terms starting 1/1/12, so we repeat: Any member interested in filling either of these positions is encouraged to contact the nominating committee for more information.
