      40th Annual Firewater Regatta

      Date: July 13, 2007
      Author: Joe Frey

      40th ANNUAL FIREWATER REGATTA

The Firewater Regatta/District 2 Championship, at Branched Oak Lake near Lincoln, was attended by over twenty boats with twelve of them hailing from other Snipe Fleets. Representatives from Wisconsin, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Iowa participated in the 40th annual regatta making it a hit for all of those involved.

For those of you unable to attend the winds were a touch light on Saturday but picked up to a measurable breeze on Sunday. The final race on Sunday was the most eventful, when the wind took its toll on one main halyard and put three to four skippers and crew in the water. In the end safety was of utmost concern and everyone returned to the shore unharmed, minus their pride.

Colorado sailors took the top three spots, with junior Peggy Tautz turning in a great performance to finish third overall. With dad Steve as crew, she finished in the top five in each race, including Sunday’s heavy air races.

A standing ovation goes to Pete and Michelle Crawford for their outstanding efforts in organizing the event. Not to forget a special round of applause to Michelle for providing daycare and Pete’s father who also spent the weekend out on the lake assisting Pete in the many roles of Firewater Chair.

It was a great weekend to sail and talk with the out of town sailors who year after year support the Firewater. A big thank you to all of those who drove to Lincoln to make the Firewater what it is today. Can’t wait to see you next year!!
